ORGANIZING

ORGANIZER: Thomas Harrington - 713-847-0006

Organizing is the lifeblood of our union.

As the American Trade Union movement looks toward its second century we take pride in the first century of achievement. American Labor has played a central role in the elevation of the American Standard of living (i.e. pensions, health & welfare protection, grievance and arbitration procedures, holidays, the Family Leave Act, eight hour workday, 40 hour work week.)

The labor movement has constantly reached out to groups in the American society striving for their share of opportunity and rewards, the blacks, the Hispanics and other minorities. Our unions must grow and expand and gain strength and we all must recognize the substantial list of goals yet to be achieved and the constant work we must do to retain what we have accomplished.
The way to achieve these goals is to ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE!

The support and involvement of the members is crucial to a good organizing campaign and is the key to maintaining our station in the workplace. If we control the skilled workforce then our contractors will be more competitive.

Things we can all do to help insure a successful organizing campaign:

  1. refer operators

  2. give leads

  3. make house calls

  4. salt

  5. file applications

  6. help the organizer in any way with information, etc.

GOOD UNION MEMBERS RESPECT PICKET LINES

A good union member is extremely careful when confronted with a picket line situation. When a Picket is established on a job where he is working.

  1. He leaves. He does not talk- just leaves.

  2. He reads the picket sign as he leaves.

  3. He does not hang around near the job.

  4. He knows that once a picket line is established, his Business Agents and other Union officials are legally gagged and handcuffed from giving advice pertaining to that job. They can only tell him if the picket line is authorized.

  5. He does not allow himself to be drawn into conversation with anyone on the job site

A GOOD UNION MEMBER KNOWS HIS RIGHTS

  1. He has the right not to work behind any picket line.

  2. He has the right to decide for himself whether to walk off a job being picketed.

  3. He understands that his trade may be under attack next.

  4. He knows that a two-gate system means a picket line and he has the right not to work, no matter how many gates the employer sets up.
